THE SURGEON™ Specs

Gabe's advice is simple: you need both in the bag. THE SURGEON™ 6109 and 5612 are one scoring system, designed by two-time PGA Tour winner Gabriel Hjertstedt. Same forged, CNC-milled carbon steel, same micro-grooves milled to the edge of the face, same flattened heel and toe relief. Different loft and bounce, so between them you have the right club for every shot around the green.

Why you need both

The 5612 is your everyday wedge. 56° with 12° of bounce: chips, pitches, standard bunker shots and full shots inside 100 yards. The bounce forgives a heavy strike and busts through the grain on Bermuda or soft ground.

The 6109 is your specialist. 61° with 9° of bounce: the chip that has to stop, the flop over a bunker, the short-sided shot, the bunker shot that has to go up fast. Open it up and the ball goes straight up and lands soft.

Together they give you 56° and 61° with the same feel, the same grooves and the same build, and a high-bounce and a low-bounce sole for whatever the lie gives you. That's the scoring pair Gabe designed them to be.

Shot by shot: which one to pull

Find your shot, lie or course condition. Where it says Either, the choice depends on your swing more than the shot.

Shot, lie or condition Club Why
Shots
Chip that needs to stop fast 6109 61° and grooves to the edge: the ball lands soft and checks.
Standard chip, bump and run 5612 56° gives you height to carry and roll to judge. The easy, repeatable shot.
Flop shot over a bunker 6109 Lay it open and the ball goes straight up. This is what the 6109 is for.
Pitch from 30 to 60 yards 5612 The everyday pitching loft. More control on distance than a 61°.
Full shot inside 100 yards 5612 56° is a full-swing club. 61° is a specialist.
Short-sided with no green 6109 Toe relief and high loft let you open it fully and still get spin.
Lies
Tight, firm lie 6109 Low bounce keeps the leading edge down so you can nip it clean.
Chipping into the grain 5612 12° of bounce skids through the grain instead of catching. Easy to hit.
Fluffy rough, ball sitting up 5612 Bounce stops the club sliding under the ball.
Hardpan or bare dirt 6109 Low bounce. A high-bounce wedge skips off hardpan.
Wet or soft turf 5612 Bounce stops the club digging when the ground is soft.
Bunkers
Firm, compact sand 6109 Low bounce gets under the ball; high bounce would skip into it.
Soft, fluffy sand 5612 The high-bounce sole splashes through instead of burying.
Plugged or fried-egg lie 5612 You need the sole to dig a little and push through. Bounce helps.
Bunker shot that has to go up fast 6109 61° plus the flattened heel: nice and high, lands soft.
Conditions
Bermuda or any grainy grass 5612 Grain grabs a low-bounce wedge. The 5612 is built to bust through it.
Bent or fescue, firm and fast 6109 Tight lies and quick greens reward spin and a low leading edge.
Desert golf (Arizona, Nevada) Either Firm fairways favour the 6109; soft bunkers favour the 5612. Most desert players carry both.
Wet climate, soft courses 5612 Soft ground punishes a digging club. Bounce is your friend.
You
You chunk chips 5612 The extra bounce forgives a slightly heavy strike.
You blade or thin chips 6109 Thinning often comes from the club bouncing off firm turf. Lower bounce sits down behind the ball.
Steep, digging swing 5612 Steep swings need bounce.
Shallow, sweeping swing 6109 Sweepers don't need bounce and get more from a lower leading edge.
Slower swing speed 6109 Grooves to the edge give spin at slow speeds where other wedges don't.

Why bounce decides it

Bounce is the angle between the leading edge and the lowest point of the sole. More bounce means the sole hits the ground first and skids; less bounce means the leading edge gets down to the ball. High bounce (the 5612's 12°) is for soft turf, soft sand, grainy grass and steep swings. Low bounce (the 6109's 9°) is for firm turf, firm sand, tight lies and shallow swings, and it lets you open the face without the leading edge lifting. Neither is better. Carry both and you always have the right sole for the lie in front of you.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Gabe say you need both?

Because no single wedge handles every lie. A high-bounce 56° is right for soft turf, grain and fluffy sand; a low-bounce 61° is right for tight lies, firm sand and shots that have to stop. With both in the bag you never have to force the wrong club.

Is there a discount for buying both?

Yes. Buy the 6109 and 5612 together in one order and you save $100, applied automatically at checkout.

What do they replace in my bag?

Your sand wedge and lob wedge. Many players go pitching wedge, then the 5612 and the 6109.

Which wedge is best for Bermuda grass?

THE SURGEON™ 5612. Bermuda is grainy and the grain grabs a low-bounce wedge. The 5612's 12° of bounce busts through it.

Which wedge is best for tight lies?

THE SURGEON™ 6109. Low bounce and toe relief keep the leading edge down so you can nip the ball cleanly, even with the face open.

Which wedge is best for bunkers?

Depends on the sand. Firm, compact sand: the 6109, which gets under the ball. Soft, fluffy sand: the 5612, which splashes through instead of burying. If you need the ball to go up fast and land soft, the 6109's 61° does that best.

Can I change the loft, lie or length?

Yes: the 6109 builds from 58° to 64° and the 5612 from 53° to 59°, lie −2° to +2°, length 35 to 36 inches. Bounce is set by the sole design. Choose a custom build on the product page or add your specs in the order note at checkout.
